The children of St. Stephen School thank you for supporting their continued growth and development in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math!
This year, our Fund-a-Need will support three critical STEM initiatives that will empower our children to become future innovators, leaders and pioneers.
First, we will raise funds for EasyCode Pillars, an interactive curriculum that will help all our students learn key coding principles using Python, an industry leading programming language. In each lesson, students complete a project through a series of activities that include coding challenges, debugging practice, and quizzes. Each lesson ends with an additional coding exercise in which students create their own project applying the skills learned. In addition to basic coding principles, students learn how to animate objects, play sounds, and use mouse and keyboard input. This curriculum costs $2750.
Second, we will purchase for our 8th Graders an Intro to Game Design. This has 10 lessons and helps students apply the skills learned in Intro to Python Part 1 to create a different type of game in each lesson. Intro to Game Design covers topics such as taking turns, moving objects, collisions, random numbers, avoiding hazards, and getting points. This program costs $555.
Third, we will purchase K-8th textbooks that meet the recently developed California Next Generation Science Standards. Within the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are three distinct and equally important dimensions to learning science. These dimensions - Crosscutting Concepts, Science and Engineering Practices, and Disciplinary Core Practices- help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time. These key ideas in science have broad importance within or across multiple science or engineering disciplines. These core ideas build on each other as students progress through grade levels. Each textbook costs approximately $125. This one-time expenditure for a complete set of textbooks for every K-8th Grader will be $36,250. In addition, each year, we will purchase consumable materials, including handbooks and lab handbooks, that cost $65 per student per year, or $18,750 per year. This program will cost $55,000 for the first annual set of materials.
The total for these three initiatives is $58,305.
